  1. Don't be ashamed of our fuzzy grasp of reality
    We have an extremely flexible theory of physiology set out for us, in Chinese medicine: just detailed enough to be accurate, yet not so complicated that it cannot be held in the head, all at once.
  2. Playing with Fire
    "Give me the power to produce fever and I will heal every illness!"
    – The Greek physician Parmenides (c. 520-450 BC)
  3. Neo-Confucian medical theory and practice
    For this article we translated one theoretical chapter on deficiency and phlegm, three clinical chapters (breast lumps, ulcers and drum distention) and commentary on the Ge Zhi Yu Lun. We chose these chapters because they seemed clinically relevant
  4. The poetry of constipation
    In the interests of helping practitioners remember medical teachings, classical texts were sometimes written in the form of mnemonic verse coupled with detailed commentaries (zhu). One such text is the Yi Zong Jin Jian.
  5. Pathogenic influences in the Nan Jing
    The Nan Jing, according to my reading of it, contains parallel theories of the pathogenesis of illness. The first theory is concerned with the effects on the body coming from exogenous factors, and the second with endogenous imbalances of yin or yang influences. This is about the former.
  6. Pain syndrome
    Various kinds of diseases can cause unbearable pain. I have treated many cases of pain with a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine and got satisfactory results. This is a report of three cases of different diseases with pain symptoms.
  7. Medical identity in China & Southeast Asia
    The medical practices of mainland Southeast Asia have been strongly influenced by the importation of medical systems from both India and China, while the integration of products and knowledge exported from mainland Southeast Asia into China had a profound and lasting effect on medicine.
  8. Pouncing Tiger, Soaring Dragon
    The highest secrets of alchemy are three:
    The essential water of vitality;
    The fire of the spirit; and
    The earth of attention.
