I am now over 60, my own hair has gone white, but still when I close my eyes I can see my mother’s smiling face, the way she was all through my childhood. I had a temper when I was small, throwing things, spitting, even. Father would beat me, but mother never did: at most I would be stood in a corner to think over right and wrong.
